  Through Shared Learning

Background

The impulse to setting up these groups was born from a need within our own community group, i.e. the Nigerian Christian Fellowship. It also has its foundation on the perceived needs observed by one of the founder directors, a teacher, for study & homework support in areas where, mainly underprivileged children live. The idea of engaging university students as volunteer tutors and befrienders grew out of her teaching experience, that young people were actually excellent at teaching each other, provided the right environment was created for them. We, therefore, wanted to create an open environment in which there would be no stigma attached to ‘not knowing’ or ‘not being good at something’.

Two groups were set up:
1) In the Millin Centre in Benwell, also known as the drop-in centre for Black Residents of Benwell and,
2) In ACANE in Byker, which stands for African Communities Advice North East.

Student Community Action Newcastle (SCAN) of the University of Newcastle was very supportive of the project and provided the first seven volunteers. The volunteers received induction training in tutoring, aspects of mentoring and child protection and they were CRB-checked. Even though, the two groups only ran for 3 months (15th March – 15th June), 33 young people registered for study support and came regularly. Following its success, Going for Success C.I.C (now Success 4 All c.i.c) was born in September 2006, as a student-run social enterprise providing tailored educational services to young people, community groups and schools. In October 2006, we gained a contract from Connexions to deliver these services. Another study support group was set up in a secondary school in Walker ( Walker Technology College ) and as well as language clubs in German (in a primary school in Northumberland), French (in a community centre in Byker) and Dutch (for 4 children with a Dutch-speaking parent in Gosforth).
We also set up a formal Service Level Agreement with SCAN, through which we could share our skills and services.

Following the success of the study groups in Walker Technology College, we received further funding to run Learning Hubs and Clubs for the whole of the Walker area.
